The Importance of Raising Awareness of Atrial Fibrillation

September is the month dedicated to raising awareness of atrial fibrillation. This makes it the ideal opportunity to introduce people to this complex health condition and raise awareness of patients’ struggles.

According to the American Heart Association, anyone is at the risk of suffering from atrial fibrillation. This complex health condition increases the chances of having a stroke by five times, as the blood forms a clot that can clog the arteries when pumped out of the heart. Yet, despite the severe risk atrial fibrillation represents, it often goes without being treated as it should.

Below are some atrial fibrillation codes to refer to:

  • |4820 Chronic Atrial Fibrillation
  • I480 Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation
  • I4821 Permanent Atrial Fibrillation
  • I4819 Other persistent Atrial Fibrillation
  • I4891 Unspecified Atrial Fibrillation

By now, many readers may start wondering about the symptoms of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation often manifests through racing heartbeats without any apparent cause. Other common symptoms may include shortness of breath, dizziness, and excessive fatigue.

However, there are other cases where patients did not show any previous symptoms but were still diagnosed with atrial fibrillation during their regular check-ups with their health care provider.

For this reason, it is crucial to stay aware of atrial fibrillation and its health risks on patients, because even if no symptoms were manifested, the patient would still be at a greater risk of getting a stroke.
